Catch a Chicken Ticket

Chickens can be speedy little critters, but it’s easy to catch a chicken ticket - a ticket for a delicious barbecued ready-to-eat chicken, that is!

Confirmation campers (classes of 2009 & 2010) host the annual BBQ chicken sale, prepared on Zion’s pits by our very own Chicken Chefs. Chickens will be ready to go on Sunday, May 18.

You can catch a chicken ticket for $7.00 (whole, cooked chicken) on May 4 or May 11, or by contacting the church office. On May 18, ticket-holder and phone orders will be given out first, with a limited number of extras available for same-day sale.

Funds raised at this event support Zion youth attending Lutheran Camp Chyrsalis’ confirmation program this summer. Matching funds provided by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

Plan Now for Picnic Plants

Plans are being made for the annual Church Picnic September 28, including the plant sale and General Store. If you’ll put in some extra cuttings from your spring transplanting they’ll be ready for the picnic. Also, a few extra jars from your summer canning will be appreciated for the General Store.

Contact Mary Ann Schmitt for picnic plans or to volunteer early!

Zion Missionaries to help build special-needs school in Tanzania

In 2006, Zion member Becky Rittimann was part of a mission team from Texas that helped a Tanzanian church and school update their facilities. As a direct result of Becky’s experiences in Africa and in the schools, she feels called to lead a team of special education teachers and instructional assistants to Tanzania in June 2008. Susan Brown, another Zion member, will join Becky as a mission team member.

Through OMEGA Mission International, the mission team will assist in building a special-needs school in Arusha, Tanzania. The team will also help with curriculum development and teacher workshops, and work with students and teachers at the Step-by Step Learning Center (SSLC).

Initial funds have been raised through OMI to begin the building process, but much is still needed to further the cause of special-needs students in Tanzania. For many generations, these people have been killed rather than educated, and have been pariahs in their community. Through the work of OMI and volunteer missionaries, this situation is changing.

You can help the OMEGA Red Team in two ways:
•Pray for this team and their mission, June 26 through July 7.
•Become a financial partner. Make your contribution payable to:

OMI
4201 North Interstate 27
Lubbock, Texas 79403
Please designate funds for the “OMEGA Red Team”

FINDING P’s IN THE GARDEN

Our most recent workday brought spring colors of purple and gold and spatial definition to Zion’s Prayer Garden. Thanks to all who helped!
The Prayer Garden is a place for peaceful meditation. Other P’s that will help Zion’s Garden grow are:
•Petunias - 36 more Mexican petunias are needed to edge the flower bed by the fountain at $3 each. Other Plants needed are dwarf nandina and dwarf yaupon holly.
•Passion Flower, or the “Flower of 5 Wounds” representing the Passion of Christ, will be planted by the garage at $25 each.
•Prayer Labyrinth Once the pathways are laid and leveled, upcoming workdays will concentrate on this unique project; digging the circle, placing the base, a fabric template and finally laying the lines and lanes.
•Pedestrian safety. Hand rails must be securely installed on the concrete steps down to the Prayer Labrynth. Experienced help is needed for secure installation.
To contribute money for plants or to join the email list for workday notices, contact John Parsons

CONNECTIONS ON LINE

by Julie Rode-Hickey

Do something for Earth Day - subscribe to the on-line edition of Zion’s newsletter. You’ll reduce both paper and postage expenses for your church, and still have access to all the latest Zion information.

While CONNECTIONS has been available on the church website for several years, print editions have been mailed to every member and to visitors and others who have requested it. This program will eliminate your “paper” edition, saving Zion printing and mailing costs.

Once a month, you will receive an e-mail notifying you that the current CONNECTIONS is available at the website. If you need a printed issue in the future, you may pick one up from the church office.

To subscribe on-line and eliminate your paper issue, click here to send an e-mail with the word SUBSCRIBE in the heading. Include your name and address in the e-mail. You can also update your home, cell and work phone numbers at the same time.
