Children (Birth to grade 5)

Children’s ministries and programs are directed by Sandi Pohlmann, Interim Education Director

New Director of Christian Education begins June 1

Autumn Foley has accepted our offer to become the new DCE for Zion,  effective June 1. Autumn will  graduate from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary on May 9 and will take a couple of weeks to get relocated to our corner of town.

Ms. Foley will come to us with a masters in Christian Education and Congregational Ministries.  She says that she feels the call to parish ministry, but not as a pastor. Her passion is Christian Education and mission.  We look forward to her bringing her new skills, insight and passion for ministry to our staff and congregation.

Sandi Pohlmann will continue on as our interim DCE through the end of June. This will enable her to introduce Autumn around and show her where things are. It will also allow Sandi to finish leading this year’s VBS while Autumn gets a feel for things.

A big thanks for your successful effort to our DCE search committee; David Walter, Yvonne Moody, Rachel Kraemer, Heather Lotts, Fritz Bohne and our pastors. And thanks be to God for new opportunities!

Power Lab:
Discovering Jesus’ Miraculous Power

Yes, it’s already time to think about Vacation Bible School! Last year nearly 400 children participated in VBS, and the numbers grow every year. Twenty more crew leaders are still needed to shepherd children to various activities on campus, and several more helpers are needed to manage those activities.

Zion’s VBS program touches many young lives with God’s word. For many children in our community, this may be the only time they hear this message of God’s love. You can make sure it happens!

VBS 2008 theme is Power Lab. Power Lab has a variety of energizing activities designed to teach Bible stories to children through sight, sound, touch, and just jumpin’ around!  There is a large or small project for every volunteer. Look for the display in the narthex to sign up, or contact Sandi Pohlmann.

Organizing Project Needs Help

After the Sunday school year is finished in May, I need a few people to help organize the Sunday school supply closet and the art room in the modular building. The new Education Director, Autumn Foley arrives June 1, and I want to clean and organize all of the Sunday school areas before then. Just let me know when you can help.

Nurseries and Wiggle Room

The church nurseries provides child care on Sunday mornings during worship and Adult Education classes. Two employees staff the nurseries every week, assisted by volunteers.

The BABY NURSERY is the first door on the right in the office wing (formerly the Library). This room is staffed and furnished for infants up through early walkers.

The TODDLER NURSERY is farther down the same hall, past the restrooms. This room is equipped for toddlers who are steady on their feet, age two years and under. A diaper changing station is inside each nursery.

During worship, parents may sit with children in the narthex, just outside the main sanctuary, and still see and hear the service without fear of disturbing others inside the sanctuary.

Child care is provided during some music rehearsals and meetings. Contact the person in charge of your meeting or group, or the church office to ask.

Nursery Volunteers

Parents of nursery-age children, other adults and teens are needed during each service to assist the permanent nursery staff in the Baby Nursery and Toddler Nursery. Volunteers are scheduled for the hour of your choice, working 3-4 times per year. Volunteers are also needed each year for evening services during Lent, and for Christmas Eve.

The church nurseries provide parents with a safe, fun place for very young children on Sunday mornings. Adults and teens are asked to volunteer as caregivers for an hour every few months.

“Callers” are needed to phone reminders to nursery volunteers of their Sunday duty. Callers are asked to work the phones for one month a year, about 30 minutes a week during “your” month.

Contact Sandi Pohlmann to volunteer for either of these important Children’s Ministry jobs.
